Facebook, Messenger and Instagram paralyzed for several hours by global blackout

The social networks Facebook and Instagram, owned by Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META), were back online on Tuesday after experiencing a technical problem that left them out of service for more than two hours for hundreds of thousands of users worldwide.

According to the Downdetector.com website, which tracks such outages, disruptions on both social networks began around 15:00 GMT, peaking with some 550,000 reports of a Facebook outage and around 92,000 for Instagram.

Via social network X, a Meta spokesperson said that a "technical issue caused some people to have difficulty accessing several of our services earlier today. We have resolved the problem". Andy Stone gave no details of the incident.

Meta, whose shares were down 1.2% on Wall Street in the afternoon, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Some 3.19 billion people around the world use applications from the tech giant, which also owns messaging service WhatsApp and social network Threads, on a daily basis.
An interface used for the WhatsApp Business application also experienced functional problems, albeit on a smaller scale.

Several Meta employees reported on the anonymous messaging app Blind that they were unable to access the company's internal systems, leading them to fear that they had been fired.
